We need to act now. Public transport, cycling, walking, and our rail network are all under threat.

The draft government plan for land transport is a radical attempt to revive the failed transport policies of the past.

  • Funding for public transport, walking, and cycling is under threat.

  • The ability of councils to add new public transport services or improve existing ones reduced.

  • Fares to increase, placing more financial pressure on households.

  • Carbon emissions reductions removed as a priority.

  • Under the plan, our rail network faces an existential threat.

  • Ironically, despite the focus on roads...they will become less safe, more crowded, and harder to maintain due to increased volume of trucks and cars.

But the plan is still draft, and we have time to change it.

The Coalition's 'traffic jam plan' will leave us all worse off.

The draft government funding plan for land transport primarily focuses on roads, leaving out buses, trains, cyclists, and pedestrians. This approach could lead to reduced public transport options, fewer opportunities for walking and cycling, and a weakened rail network.

The consequence? More crowding of our roads and fewer alternatives. Picture our children walking home from school in a country with fewer footpaths, while trucks whiz past them. Imagine workers struggling to commute without reliable public transport, putting additional strain on our economy. And consider our elderly citizens navigating rural roads alongside more trucks, whether they’re heading to health appointments or visiting their grandkids.

But the plan is still draft, and we have time to change it.
